Marmaris Castle & Archaeology Museum: A Short Visitor's Guide

Standing on a rise that looks down over the harbour, right in the middle of Marmaris's old town, the castle is the city's most recognisable landmark. Reachable in a few minutes on foot through the narrow stone streets, it is one of the essential stops of any visit, both for its history and for the views from its terraces.

A brief history

Traces of the first settlement here reach back to antiquity. The castle is widely thought to have taken its present shape mainly in the 16th century, during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, as preparations were made for the Rhodes campaign. Used for military purposes for many years, the building was restored in the early 1990s and turned into an archaeology museum.

What's inside the museum?

The halls around the castle courtyard display artefacts from the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods, as well as pieces from Ottoman times. Ceramics, amphorae and everyday objects unearthed from the surrounding ancient cities open a small window onto thousands of years of local history. As you wander the courtyard, don't miss the view of the harbour and bay from atop the walls.

Opening hours and entry

The museum is usually open from around 08:30 in the morning until the evening; in winter it closes earlier. Thanks to the summer night-museum programme, the castle can sometimes be visited late into the evening — a lovely chance for a cool evening stroll on hot summer days. Because prices and hours can change each year, we recommend checking current information before your visit; Museum Card holders can enter free of charge in most periods.

A visiting tip

Since the castle is within walking distance of the old bazaar and the streets inside the walls, it's very easy to combine your visit with these areas. The stone houses of 8 Oda Marmaris sit right within this fabric; after your morning coffee you can reach the castle gate in a few steps. The most beautiful light for photos falls on the walls in the hours near sunset.
