Discovering Old Marmaris: The Castle Streets, the Bazaar and Bar Street

When people think of Marmaris, the coast and the boats usually come to mind; but the real soul of the city hides in the old-town fabric that spreads around the castle. Narrow stone streets, walls draped in bougainvillea and single-storey shuttered houses create an atmosphere that here and there recalls the Aegean islands.

The streets inside the castle

Once sheltered within the castle walls, this quarter is made up of stepped, very narrow stone lanes. Being closed to vehicle traffic, it's ideal for a quiet walk in the morning and evening hours. At every corner you meet colourful bougainvillea, small squares and doorways ready to become a photograph.

The covered bazaar

At the heart of the old town, the covered bazaar is a labyrinth of streets shaded by awnings. From jewellery and souvenirs to carpets and kilims, from spice sellers to local products, there is a wide range here. In this area, where the culture of bargaining is still alive, the best thing is to wander without hurrying.

Bar Street

The centre of nightlife is 39th Street, known to everyone as Bar Street. With bars, live-music venues and clubs on both sides, it stays lively until late on summer evenings. For those seeking a quiet holiday the daytime hours are best; for those who want some buzz, the nights show a completely different face.

Why stay in the old town?

Because the castle, the bazaar, the marina and Bar Street are all within walking distance, staying in the old town lets you reach everywhere without getting in a car. The restored stone houses of 8 Oda Marmaris are right within this fabric; after shaking off the day's tiredness, you rest behind a door that opens onto quiet stone streets.
